Regular Screenings are Important
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, except skin cancers. When detected in its earlier stages, breast cancer can be successfully treated. Routine mammograms and breast exams can detect cancer early and provide women with better treatment options. According to the American Cancer Society, the five-year survival rate for localized breast cancer is 99 percent when diagnosed early **
Cervical cancer also is treatable if detected early. Since there are often no noticeable symptoms, it is important that women get screened regularly.
Talking to Your Provider
To make sure you stay healthy, you need to help your health care providers by talking openly and honestly about your sexual orientation or gender identity. Coming out is crucial to helping your health care providers help keep you healthy.
Ask questions before your appointment If you are seeing a new provider, ask questions on the phone prior to making an appointment. “Do you serve LGBTQ patients?” or “Have you or your staff ever been trained on LGBTQ health issues?”
